Rebranding a National Basketball Team.

During my time at the University of Oregon I was able to connect with the Tongan National Basketball player Marcus Alipate. He spoke of his time with the team and how they struggled with consistency in branding and product. We decided to approach the team and ask if it would be possible to help them alleviate these issues. The team representatives were excited to have help so we immediately began scheduling meetings with the team. It was important for us to connect with the players and the culture to create branding and uniforms that authentically represent them.

Concept Inspirations

  • This Idea represents the Tongan pride in its kingdom. It has never been colonized so there is an inherent strength the community feels because of this. The branding and uniforms are derived from the crest and signature sash worn by the king.

  • “Horsepower” as an inspiration was derived by an inside joke from the team. There were constantly horse related jokes that were happening so we decided to find a unique way to incorporate this.

  • This Concept is taken from this common phrase on the island. It spoke to the team as in the recent path they played in a basketball team with only 6 players on the roster. Despite being short handed they were able to place in the tournament. They felt this phrase encapsulated the heart and passion they needed to find this team success. The designs that represent are inspired by the beauty of the “mountains'“ of Tonga. The natural beauty of the island is shown through the strong and emotional sunsets experienced there.
